Weekend Guide July 12 + 13 + 14

It’s FRIDAY and time for the WEEKEND GUIDE!

Course for the Force is happening today, Friday July 12, as a precursor to Comic-Con next week. This Star Wars Relay-Run for Charity will be rolling through (it’s a run from SF to Sand Diego) with a festival in Santa Monica. The Spazmatics will be performing at the Santa Monica Pier at 4:30 today. If you’re on the west side, check it out. Star Wars outfits are encouraged.

Also tonight, iam8bit gallery is hosting a Robot Chicken presentation of Friendship All-Stars of Friendship: The Art Show. The pieces are all generated by artists and friends of Robot Chicken, and then the proceeds go to the Echo Park charity, 826LA. Golden Road will be supplying beer and Origami Vinyl will be spinning tunes. RSVP HERE.

Head downtown on Saturday July 13th in the evening (6-9p) to learn about animals and stargaze at a Campfire Event at LA’s Historic Park. Doesn’t that sound fun? Bring blankets to layout and watch the stars with experts telling you about the constellations.

Maybe afterward head further into downtown to check out a free concert in Pershing Square Downtown Stage 2013. The Psychedelic Furs and Badwater are playing from 8-10pm. Free with lawn seating.

If the Psychedelic Furs aren’t your cup of tea, hit up the Getty’s Saturday’s Off The 405  from 6-9pm on Saturday for a free concert by Pickwick in the Getty courtyard. It’s free and no reservations are required, but I recommend carpooling and getting there early since it can get packed.

Weekend Guide Feb 3 + 4 + 5

Before I begin the Weekend Guide, I want to share about a series of images posted on yahoo this morning showing the abandonded North Brother Island in NYC. Click HERE to see a slide show of crazy images like this one below.

I also must confess that work went late last night and I didn’t get to attend trampoline dodgeball. But have no fear, this event happens weekly and I plan on attending it next week. So more to come on that later. Alrighty, it’s time to jump into the Weekend Guide!

FRIDAY Feb 3:

Any Star Wars fans out there? Tonight in honor of the 3D release of Star Wars: Episode I, there is a pop-up art gallery at Brisk Bodega Cantina. I keep finding mixed info on the date and time of this event which means it’s probably unavailable at this point. Im including it because it sounds cool and Ill keep it on my radar for when it comes to town next time. It’s a Star Wars themed music and art event that sounds awesome.

Tonight at UCB, Paul F Tompkins is doing his Dead Authors Reading at UCB LA (to benefit 826LA). H G Wells (Paul F. Tompkins) and J.R.R Tolkien (Matt Walsh) will be on stage chatting and answering your questions. Make your reservations HERE. It starts at 6:30p and tickets are $5.

Also tonight at 7:30p at the LACMA, Gary Oldman is leading a conversation followed by a viewing of The Contender. It’s being held in the Bing Theater and tickets are $10 (HERE).

SATURDAY Feb 4:

Speaking of the LACMA, di you check out the Metropolis II exhibit last weekend? Well, it’s still there and judging by the images, it’s worth a visit. The LACMA is also housing a complete replication of the Eames Kit House, which was designed and lived in by the Eames family and still exists in the Pacific Palisades. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting the Eames home a year ago and this mini version looks awesome.

Visit the LACMA this weekend to see it, or take a drive to see the real deal.

Bergamot Station has a 5pm reception at TAG Gallery, as well as a 5pm Olga de Amaral Reception from 5-7p. At 7pm the Robert Berman Gallery has a Jonathan Bickart opening. Art, art and more art!

SUNDAY Feb 5:

Sunday is the Super Bowl, as Im sure you all already know. That is the perfect time for non-sports people to get their shopping done (my tradition) or to go to Disneyland (no lines!). This year I am going to a S.B. gathering (for the company, not really for the game). There are some fun bars offering specials to celebrate the event.

Lola’s (the most girlie martini bar alive) is offering a deal (according to Thrillist) for $15 it’s all you can drink Fat Tires. So if you like martini’s and your boy likes beer, head to Lola’s to catch the game.

My favorite bar Tony’s Darts Away will have a special menu packed with yummy vegan and non vegan options. Township Kitchen Americana & Saloon is having $3 hot wings (if that’s your style).
HERE is a link to a site with a full listing of bars and their Super Bowl deals.

On Sunday, Brett Gelman has a stand-up show at 8pm, for $5 and get tickets HERE. You might know him from his new podcast Gelmania.

Happy weekend, everyone!

Weekend Guide Nov. 17+ 18+ 19

Yesterday was really rough, but today will be better…. because it’s FRIDAY! Yup, it’s already time for the WEEKEND GUIDE! Just a heads up, I will be in Boston this weekend for a wedding so you need to do ALL the things I post about and tell me how they are. Also, this means I won’t be posting anything new on Saturday or Sunday (but you should be out enjoying the weekend anyway, right?). Also, I must note that I finished writing this post and then my browser crapped out and now Im rewriting this to you all. That’s how much I love you, that I am willing to rewrite ALL of it.

Friday Nov. 18

Lets begin with some corporate deals for the day. Starbucks is offering a 2 for 1 deal on all their holiday drinks (from 2-5pm Nov 17-20) and if you are anything like my sister, this deal is like Christmas morning. See the dets on the deal HERE. Groupon is also doing something called $1 lunch. Check THIS link for places near you participating.

Okay, now on to the really good stuff. Tonight Jason Brockert has an art opening at Iam8but gallery. His work explores pop culture (think Star Wars and Tranformers) through paintings. The opening reception is tonight 7pm-11p at iambit with drinks and a live dj.  You can’t miss this free event, and you can RSVP through facebook HERE.

Jason Brockert’s Work

If you don’t like free booze, art gazing and DJ’s (because you’re crazy), then you should check out some cheap comedy at UCB tonight which is offering a double show, Soundtrack (Brian Huskey, Jason Mantzoukas and more) and Death By Roo Roo (with Jackie Clarke, Brett Gelman, Gil Ozeri, Adam Pally and more). Get tickets HERE.

The King King on Hollywood Blvd is hosting Christian Martin, Worthy and Joplin tonight at 9pm and if you get tickets HERE in advance they are $15, or at the door for $20.

Saturday Nov. 19

At noon on Saturday, check out the Food Fashion Trucks at The Shop Lot LA in Silver Lake. Look for some fashion treasures and then stroll around the neighborhood because it’s awesome. Check the poster to the right for all the dets.

Kate Micucci is hilarious. Check out her video below. She is putting on a one woman show at the Steve Allen Theater on Saturday which is directed by Ron Lynch. The show starts at 8pm and tickets are $10… get them HERE!

LA Venice Cocktail Invitational is happening this weekend ($10 suggested donation). Amatuer mixologists will battle it out to create the perfect cocktail and you get to vote. The winner is announced at midnight and the proceeds go to support the 826LA writing program. You get a fun night, and the money goes to a good cause. Win win!

If you didn’t get tickets to Friday nights show at UCB, alas there are 2 more great shows on Saturday night. The Shit Show (with guest David Wain!) is happening at 10pm and you must go get tickets HERE. Directly after this show is a sold out show called Tournament of Nerds (with guest Pauly Shore). I suggest you put your name on the waiting list, go to The Shit Show, and when you get out hopefully your name will be called and youll get to see both shows for $15. A night of big comedians for $15? Score!

Sunday Nov. 20

The Nerdest panel is back this weekend with very cool people attending. Marti Noxon (Buffy, Glee, Mad Men), Danny Zuker (Modern Family), and Craig Silverstein (Nikita) will be in the discussion. The event starts at 5pm (doors open at 4:30) and it’s held at Meltdown Comics on Sunset.  Get tickets HERE!
