On Sunday May 5th it’s Cinco de Mayo… but it’s also Big Sunday! Big Sunday is a volunteer weekend about helping your community. In the past I’ve chopped wood at a kids summer camp, danced with elderly people at an old folks social, volunteered at the first Echo Park Art Walk and even made sandwiches and hand delivered them to homeless people. All of these activities were rewarding, eye opening, extremely memorable and a great chance to meet others in the community interested in helping others. There’s still plenty of time to sign up for an event. Do it!

SATURDAY May 5th:

This weekend is one of my FAVORITE weekends because it’s BIG SUNDAY! It’s a weekend full of volunteering fun. Seriously, it’s an awesome event and a great way to meet other people. I’ve done it for several years and it’s some of my favorite LA memories. Click the link above, sign-up through the website and read through all the opportunities. You don’t need to be an expert on anything. Just come into it with a willingness to help out and that’s all that is required.

Last year for Big Sunday I volunteered at the Echo Park PDA open house at Sunset and Echo Park. Sure enough the event is happening from 12-6p and The Warehouse will be there selling vintage goods. It was awesome last year. There were live bands and I even bumped into Danny Devito and his wife in a garage. It was wild, and a great community event. Im sure you can volunteer through Big Sunday, or if you can’t commit to it, just stop by the event and walk around.

Come celebrate the last day of JACCC’s LA Bloom Fesitval on Saturday. From 12p-4p it’s Family Day with workshops and performances for the whole family. This is a free event, so stop in if you like and then check out the area.

If you haven’t been to LA Cuevita (see above) then why not check out Golden Road’s “Cinco de Moustache” or Mohawk Bends “Cinco de Mohawk”.

Now I know tickets are sold out, but UCB often has standby tickets so its worth telling you about this. Drew Carey is hosting the Midnight Show (at 12a) on Saturday. If you can stay up late enough, stop in for it. HERE‘s more info.

SUNDAY May 6th:

If you aren’t super busy today volunteering as part of Big Sunday (they give you a free tee-shirt.. just say’in).. why not do a 5k around the Universal Backlot! Miles for Melanoma is a run taking you through the fake streets from some of your favorite movies/shows. It’s $40 (the money goes to a good cause) and there’s still time to join!

If you’re a foodie, you might enjoy the Hollyhock food event from 1-5p on Sunday. For $35 you get one ticket to the Hollyhock house event “Taste of the Eastside” 1-5pm. Local restaurants are serving up all you can eat treats, so bring a backpack and do it up picnic style.

On Sunday at CalArts there is a World Music and Dance Festival. If you’re willing to make the trek through the valley.

Casa Vega is serving up $5 Bloody Maria deals on Sunday. Come nurse that Cinco de Mayo hangover at Casa Vega!
