Mike Mitchell @ Gallery 1988

This past Friday night, after a glorious day off, I FINALLY got to attend an art gallery opening at Gallery 1988 on Melrose. I usually include their openings in my Weekend Guides, but because of work I can never get there in time. With the holiday on Friday I decided to take advantage of the time off and attend the Gallery 1988 opening of “Just Like Us” by Mike Mitchell.

I arrived late (my poor friend had been there waiting) and parked along La Brea, across from the famous Pinks. Per usual, Pink’s had a long line (not that I care as a vegetarian, but it is an LA landmark). *Friend of the blog, Jamie pointed out that Pink’s offers a yummy veggie hot dog. I’m thinking at the next Gallery 1988 opening I’ll stop by and enjoy a soy dog before I get my art-on.

I got into Gallery 1988, which was smaller than I anticipated. It had a great showing, and a long line of patrons eager to buy Mike Mitchell’s prints. They were selling limited quantities, so people were hoping to get their favorites before they sold out.

This show was awesome and really funny. The work was all caricatures of classic pop culture icons mixed with puns. It was fun to go around the room and guess who was who and the title helped reveal the pun.

I didn’t get a photo of her, but Robyn Von Swank was there documenting the event and for those of you who don’t recognize her name, she does photography for a ton of comedians. She even won an award at the Instragrammys.

Note the AC Slater + Mrs. Doubtfire caricatures… as well as the artist Mike Mitchell standing in the right of this photo.

This one is my favorite! Tobias Funke (David Cross) from Arrested Development! The work will be on display until April 28th, so see it before it’s gone. Also, the limited edition prints are available for $30 each. What a steal!
